Fire erupts at Yaphank compost facility

Massive flames burned out of control this morning at a compost station in Yaphank.

Fire officials say the massive mulch fire began at LI Compost Corp. on Horseblock Road around 2:40 a.m.

Flames burned for hours but are now 99 percent contained, fire officials say. Twenty-five fire departments and more than 100 firefighters have been on the scene, as well as the Department of Environmental Conservation.

Officials say there are no reported injuries and it is still unknown what started the fire.
