Hempstead unveils its own Lighthouse Project

? The Town of Hempstead unveiled its own plan for the redevelopment of Nassau Coliseum today, proposing a scaled-back version of the Lighthouse Project.

Islanders owner Charles Wang proposed hotels, large-scale office towers, thousands of units of housing and the renovation of the Coliseum.

Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray says the area cannot handle a project the size of the Lighthouse.

The town?s plan limits any hotel?s height to nine stories, offices to four stories and a maximum of 500 housing units. Town officials say the smaller plan is more in line with what residents want.

Public hearings on the plan will be held before the town board votes on it.
