Yaphank compost fire being investigated by DEC

Officials say the state is now investigating the massive fire that broke out at a Suffolk compost facility yesterday.

Flames shot more than 40 feet in the air at the LI Compost Corp. in Yaphank at around 2 a.m.

Firefighters were not able to get the fire under control for hours.

More than 150 firefighters battled the fire, which burned 25 feet down into the mulch pile.

According to Newsday, the state DEC will check to see if there were unsafe conditions before the fire.

The Suffolk Health Department is calling the odors and dust from the facility unacceptable.
