School staff disciplined after child drowns on LI

One teacher and two administrators at a Manhattan school have been disciplined after one of their students drowned in Long Beach last month.

Nicole Suriel, 12, of Harlem was caught in a rip current off Long Beach in June on a class trip. No lifeguards were on duty while the 24 kids were at the beach.

An independent New York City investigation found the trip wasn't properly planned or supervised. The teacher in charge of the trip is being fired, the school?s principal is on probation and the assistant principal is demoted.

The report also found only two children on the trip knew how to swim.
