Less than 25 percent of every dollar donated for Long Island charities goes to the intended cause, according to a new report by the state attorney general. According to Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, approximately 21 cents of every dollar donated for local charities reach the actual organizations. He said most donor money is pocketed by for-profit telemarketing companies making the fundraising calls. In 2010, Long Island telemarketers collected $7.4 million on behalf of charities. Of that, only $1.5 million went to the groups in need. The report says the New York State Parks Police PBA, New York AM Vets, Firefighters Charitable Foundation and One Israel Fund collected the smallest amounts from money raised.
