Cuomo to introduce bill on reporting sex abuse

Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.) announced today that he's crafting legislation that would make it illegal for high school or college employees to hear of child sexual abuse and not directly report it to police. The absence of such legislation is one of the reasons why former Penn State University football coach Joe Paterno may never face formal charges. Paterno was fired after failing to tell police about sex abuse allegations by his former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. Current legislation requires only health care workers and teachers report suspected or reported child abuse to police. Failure to do so is a misdemeanor offense.
