Route 110 drivers, store owners fume over roadwork

Some frustrated drivers and business owners in Melville say a long-term road construction project on Route 110 is doing more harm than good.Sheldon Sackstein, of Action Long Island, helped get the project started, and he admits it's been difficult. The Deparmtent of Transportation (DOT) is spending $56 million to replace an aging overpass and reconfigure the on- and off-ramps to improve traffic flow on Route 110, which sees more than 120,000 cars a day. "We are seeing progress and time will tell whether or not this project ultimately accomplishes the objectives that are in the best interests of all of us," Sackstein says. However, business owners in the area say the roadwork, with its confusing signs and detours, has been hurting their bottom lines. The DOT says the entire project is on schedule and should be completed by the winter of 2013. Officials add that the temporary road closures on Route 110 will end soon.
