Nassau layoffs raise concerns among residents

Some Nassau residents are concerned that county services will be negatively impacted by the latest round of layoffs that resulted in more than 250 workers losing their jobs today.
The Departments of Social Services, Probation and Public Works were all hit hard by the firings, and CSEA President Jerry Larrichuita says Nassau residents will bear the consequences.
"When our first snowstorm hits this year, our residents will see it will take them longer to get out of their driveway," he says.
Come February, the county will face even more cutbacks. Nearly 50 positions in the police department will be lost through attrition, and two police precincts are still on the chopping block.
"We still think it's irresponsible to close police precincts," PBA President James Carver said in a statement. "If anything, we should be hiring more police officers and not shutting down police precincts."Dozens of Nassau workers demoted to cut costsMangano's deadline for Nassau unions passes with no dealNIFA approves Nassau's 2012 budget
