Control of Nassau Legislature up for grabs

Nassau voters headed to the polls today to choose which party will control the county Legislature.

Click 'NEXT' below your video player for more on Nassau County contests.Republicans took control of the Legislature back in 2009 for the first time in 10 years and County Executive Ed Mangano is also a Republican. The county GOP is hoping to stay in control, saying it still has plenty left on its agenda. Meanwhile, Democrats are trying to wrest back the majority. They need to pick up two seats to regain control of the Legislature. Nassau Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs says he's banking on bitterness from taxpayers over the county's troubled fiscal situation, particularly looming layoffs and property tax worries. Nassau's Republican Presiding Officer, Peter Schmitt, says Republicans have been trying to close a massive budget hole without raising taxes, a task that has involved tough choices.
