Don't puff on the platform: LIRR smoking ban starts Sunday

Starting Sunday, smokers will have to walk a bit further before lighting up when they get off Long Island Rail Road trains. A systemwide smoking ban for LIRR platforms goes into effect on Nov. 13. The rules also apply to outdoor ticketing and boarding areas. Officials say there will be a brief grace period where MTA police will only warn customers who break the rules. Afterward, violators could get slapped with a $50 fine and up to 30 days in jail. At the Mineola train station today, many riders applauded the new policy. Some smokers say it will take some getting used to.Smoking ban on LIRR platforms to begin SundayLIRR smoking ban goes into effect Nov. 13
