Popular Fire Island shops destroyed by raging fire

Officials say a massive fire on Fire Island is finally under control after firefighters from 20 local departments spent more than 12 hours battling the flames. Fire officials say the flames sparked on a dock on Fire Island Boulevard in the community of Fire Island Pines at about 9:15 p.m. yesterday. Firefighters worked through the night to get the blaze under control, but not before it destroyed a handful of popular shops in the downtown area of the community.

Officials say the dockside Pavilion and Sip-and-Twirl nightclubs are essentially leveled. The Pines Bistro, a local pizza shop and several nearby offices have been destroyed as well. Firefighters say they believe the fire started on the dock outside the LaFountain commercial building. The embers were carried by a stiff wind to a vacation home several hundred feet away, which also ignited.Fire Island residents say many of these buildings were the economic engine for the Fire Island Pines community, and were a huge draw for summer vacationers. Police say the buildings were empty at the time and nobody was injured. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
