LI charities struggle to collect turkeys for the needy

With just more than a week left until Thanksgiving, some Long Island charities are scrambling to stock up on frozen turkeys for needy families. The Lighthouse Mission, based in Bellport, had hoped to hand out 2,000 turkeys this holiday. With the clock ticking, the group says it has less than 150 on hand-- not even 10 percent of its goal. Volunteers say the recession has made their efforts extremely difficult, although they say they remain hopeful that they will pull through in the Eleventh Hour.
