NYC mayor: Manhattan man arrested in bomb plot
? Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced last night that a Manhattan man is accused of plotting to bomb key locations across the city.
Officials say they arrested the 'lone wolf' just before he carried out his plans.
Jose Pimentel, 27, is being called an 'al-Qaida sympathizer' accused of plotting to bomb post offices and police stations in New York City. In addition, Pimentel was also allegedly targeting soldiers coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan. Officials say he learned how to make a bomb from reading an online magazine.
Pimentel also relied on a particularly notorious article called "how to make a bomb in the kitchen of your Mom."
Bloomberg says Pimentel is a U.S. citizen from the Dominican Republic who wanted to hurt the government in any way he could.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says the government had been watching Pimentel for two years but finally decided to make the arrest Saturday because he had started to make the bombs.
Pimentel's attorney says his client doesn't match the profile of someone who would commit terrorism and that the case against him is not as strong as prosecutors say it is.
Pimentel's mother told reporters today that she apologizes for the situation and thinks the NYPD has handled it well.
Pimentel faces numerous terrorism charges. To watch Mayor Michael Bloomberg's full press conference on the arrest of Pimentel, turn to iO channel 612 on your cable box.
