Experts advise LIers to shop smart this Black Friday

With just hours to go before Black Friday, Long Islanders are getting ready to do some serious shopping, but the things they're going to spend their hard-earned dollars on are likely to be different from years past.

According to the results of a recent News 12/Hofstra University poll, 42 percent of Long Islanders say they'll spend about the same this year as last year. Twenty-eight percent of the respondents plan to spend slightly less, and 15 percent say they'll spend slightly more.

Regardless of their spending, economists advise shoppers to plan ahead, look for bargains and try to avoid making impulsive decisions.

Economist Dr. Pearl Kamer says people are likely to buy more practical things this year and stay away from luxury items. Poll resultsSummary report
