Huntington Station residents on edge after triple shooting

Huntington Station residents are on edge tonight after a triple shooting left three men wounded yesterday, leading many to wonder whether increased police patrols can effectively curtail violence in the area. Police say Darius Howard, 16, Devon White, 18 and Philip Perez, 22, all suffered non-life threatening injuries when they were shot inside their Jeep. Investigators say the incident appears to be gang-related. Gang activity originally prompted police to add foot patrols and the Shot Spotter system, which can pinpoint the exact location of a shooting. In addition, officials say they will station an officer at a local community center to monitor neighborhood surveillance cameras. "We want them to know that if they do something bad, it's probably on camera," says Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer. However, many residents say they are afraid for their families' safety and demand a decrease in area shootings. To hear extended reaction to the shootings in Huntington Station, select iO Extra on Channel 612.3 young men shot in Huntington Station
