Lindenhurst woman sentenced in fatal DWI crash
A Lindenhurst woman who was convicted of killing her best friend in a drunken-driving crash has been sentenced to three-and-a-half to 10-and-a-half years in prison.
Angela Commisso admitted to being drunk and high when she hit a pole on Montauk Highway in West Islip last year. The crash killed 23-year-old Jenny Daprino, of Bay Shore.
Commisso was driving with a suspended license from a prior DWI.
Daprino's family says Commisso lied about who was driving, who was in the car and how it all happened to cover her tracks. However, Commisso's family insists it's not true.
"She's very remorseful as anyone would be," says Commisso's mother, Sally. "It was her best friend."
Sally Commisso adds that her daughter has been struggling with drugs and alcohol since she was a teenager, and she hopes that now her daughter will get the help she needs.
Before her sentencing, Judge Stephen Braslow told Commisso that her actions were reprehensible and unforgivable, and that she should have taken responsibility from the beginning.
