According to police, the 26-year-old robbery suspect entered the Liberty Gas Station at Hempstead Turnpike and Stone Street displaying a handgun this morning.

Investigators say the suspect went behind the counter and removed about $2,000 from the register. The off-duty officer had just arrived to fill his car with gas and saw the robbery taking place, police say.

Police say the suspect was attempting to flee the scene, but the officer ordered him to stop. The robbery suspect then turned and pointed his weapon at the officer, forcing the officer to discharge his weapon, police say.

Cops say the suspect fled on foot and was later found inside a parked vehicle with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
