Nassau Democrats ask for precinct-closure details
As Nassau County faces a multimillion-dollar budget shortfall this year, County Executive Ed Mangano (R-Nassau) has said he's considering closing police precincts to save cash.
Now, Nassau Democrats want details and they're calling on Mangano to release more information about his precinct plans.
Mangano's office says the commissioner is "preparing a plan that realigns police precinct boundaries while keeping the same number of officers on the streets."
Several of Nassau's Democratic legislators went to the 1st Precinct in Baldwin today to protest Mangano's plan.
While it's not clear which two of the eight precincts might ultimately close, one proposal that was once discussed is to combine the 2nd Precinct in Woodbury with the 6th Precinct in Manhasset.
Mangano's office says the closures will be announced Wednesday at a Nassau County Legislature public safety hearing. NIFA: Nassau's proposed 2012 budget not adding up Nassau police union uses mobile ads to blast budget cuts More than 1,000 layoffs included in Mangano's budget plan
