Data shows number of welfare recipients on LI has soared

According to the state Office of Temporary Disability Assistance, the recession has taken a serious toll on Long Island residents.

The number of people forced to go on welfare has soared 67 percent since 2007.

The department says the number of Nassau County residents on public assistance jumped from 13,535 to 15,290 people just in the past year. In Suffolk County, the number rose from under 18,000 to more than 20,000 people.
