High school football player raises awareness of concussions

A high school football player from Long Island who suffered a severe concussion following a collision on the field is trying to raise awareness about the condition.

Junior varsity linebacker Michael Greco, 15, collided head-to-head with an opposing player a few weeks ago. He stayed in the game, but then realized something wasn't right when he got dizzy.

Greco was taken to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a concussion. More than three weeks later, Greco says he still suffers from headaches which have kept him off the field and out of gym class.

Doctors say it's often difficult for athletes and coaches to find the balance between toughing it out and taking a hit to the head seriously.

"We know the risk of second-impact syndrome, we know the risk of post-concussive syndrome, and at this point, there's no reason to take a risk in these kids," says Dr. Hayley Queller, of St. Charles Hospital.

Doctors say people with a learning disability, attention deficit disorder, a history of migraines or previous concussions are considered more prone to getting concussions.
