Hempstead man accused of beating his infant son

Police have arrested a Hempstead man for allegedly beating his 7-month-old son yesterday.

According to investigators, Omar Flores, 23, repeatedly hit the boy at his home which he shares with his live-in girlfriend, 26-year-old Francisca Sandoval. She was at work at the time of the incident.

Police say a tenant who shares the couple's home on Hoff Court called 911 after hearing the child's incessant screams. The infant was taken to the hospital with cuts, abrasions and bruising all over his body.

Today, Flores' girlfriend told Spanish TV reporters that her son was unharmed. She said Flores is a loving father who never hit his son.

However, prosecutors said in court today that when police arrived at Flores' home, he admitted to beating his son for crying and said it wasn't the first time it had happened.

Flores has been charged with felony assault and endangering the welfare of a child. Police say he's in the country illegally, and if convicted, he could be deported back to Honduras.

Flores remains behind bars on $5,000 bail. He's due back in court Thursday.
