GOP looking to gain majority in Suffolk Legislature

Every seat in the Suffolk Legislature is up for grabs this Election Day, which could potentially result in a major shift in the balance of power.

There are currently 12 Democrats and six Republicans in the county Legislature. The GOP needs three seats to pull even with Democrats, but even Suffolk Republican Chairman John Jay LaValle admits that it'll be an uphill battle.

"We are being outspent five and 10 to one by the Democrats," he says, "but we are in the streets talking about the issues most important to the residents."

Democrats have their own concerns this election cycle, namely, low turnout and lack of interest among voters, according to Suffolk Democratic Chairman Richard Shaffer.

Among the closely watched races, in District 5, Democrat Kara Hahn is going up against Republican Anthony Moncayo. In the 7th District, Democrat Robert Calarco is challenging the GOP's John Giannott, and in the 18th District, Democrat William Spencer is facing Republican Elizabeth Black.

Political consultant Mike Dawidziak doesn't think the GOP will win the majority, but could come close.
