Nassau Legislature approves 2012 budget

The Nassau Legislature voted 11-8 to approve the $2.6 billion 2012 budget proposed by the Republican County Executive Ed Mangano.

The budget includes proposals to close two yet undetermined Nassau County Police Department precincts and possibly lay off hundreds of county workers if $150 million in union concessions are not made.

The budget however does not include any tax hikes but does include borrowing $450 million over then next four years.

"Nassau's budget is the tough medicine the county needs to recover from decades of poor fiscal policies," said Mangano in a statement after the vote had passed.

The budget now goes before Mangano and the Nassau County Interim Finance Authority (NIFA) for approval.
