LIPA: 83 percent of customers now have power
The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) is gradually getting the power back on for customers, but those who are still off the grid say their patience is wearing thin.
LIPA says electricity has been restored to about 83 percent of its customers, but just under 90,000 people are still in the dark on Long Island. At one point during the storm, more than 520,000 people were without power.
Robert Erlich, of South Huntington, has been without electricity since Sunday. He says he didn't see a single LIPA truck until today, despite the fact he's been calling the utility for days.
"All they do is pat themselves on the back saying, 'What a great job we are doing,'" Erlich says.
During a news conference this afternoon, LIPA Chief Operating Officer Michael Hervey promised that linemen and tree trimmers will work through the weekend and try to get power restored to some of the side streets that have been untouched so far.
Hervey also admitted that their efforts to update the public on their progress could have been better.
LIPA is working to have power restored to 90 percent of those affected by tomorrow.
