Family, fellow officers honor detective killed in crash

Family, friends and fellow officers came out to the wake for Detective Sgt. Robert Reeks, 57, who was killed in a car accident.

The 30-year veteran died Saturday morning after his car veered off Sunrise Highway in Moriches.

Those who came out to show their respects say he was a positive role model, not only within the department, but also to the outside community.

"Bob did a lot for this community," said Stony Brook University Professor Gary Mar. "He came out and spoke to my students to educate them about hate crimes. He was always there."

Reecks' funeral will be on Thursday in Ronkonkoma.
