Police officer who drowned while kayaking laid to rest

Family, friends and co-workers said their final farewells today to a Suffolk County father and NYPD officer who died after a kayaking accident last week.

Patrick Luca went missing Friday while kayaking with his 5-year-old son, Caden, on the Nissequogue River. Caden was found floating in the water and rescued.

Luca's body was found in the Long Island Sound Saturday. Officials say unlike his son, the 41-year-old wasn't wearing a life jacket when he went into the water.

During his funeral today at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Smithtown, Luca was remembered as a devoted husband and father by his family, while his colleagues recalled his ability to make everyone laugh.

Luca was laid to rest at St. Charles Cemetery in East Farmingdale. He is survived by his wife, daughter and son. Family, friends remember officer who drowned kayakingResidents: Troubles in river may have caused kayaking deathBody of missing kayaker recovered in Nissequogue River
