County Exec. Mangano takes on LI prescription drug abuse

County Executive Ed Mangano (R- Nassau) is fighting back against rampant prescription drug abuse on Long Island.

Mangano has teamed up with county lawmakers to create a subcommittee that will study the growing problem and come up with a series of recommendations.

Officials say painkiller abuse is one of the top causes of death [on the Island, second only to traffic accidents.

Lawmakers are encouraging all residents to properly dispose of prescription drugs. Nassau police will also team up with the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to hold a drug disposal program Oct. 19.

Prescription drug abuse has been thrown into the limelight after several armed robberies at pharmacies on Long Island, including the deadly Father's Day shooting at Haven Pharmacy in Medford.
