Tornado watch issued for LI

(AP) - The National Weather Service says conditions areripe for tornadoes in New York City, Long Island and southernConnecticut because of Hurricane Irene.

Meteorologist Tim Morrin says the agency issued a tornado watcheffective until 11 a.m. Sunday. A watch means conditions arefavorable to tornadoes. It differs from a tornado warning, whichmeans twisters have been spotted.

Morrin says twisters are a common occurrence with hurricanes.

He says the tornado watch was expanded from Maryland and NewJersey.
