LIPA: Power restored to about 70 percent of customers
Four days after Tropical Storm Irene swept through the Island, leaving destruction in its path, tens of thousands of people are still without power.
The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) says its crews have restored electricity to more than 358,000 customers since the storm, but about 165,000 are still in the dark.
The utility company says the storm caused the most damage to Long Island's electrical system in 30 years.
Among the towns that are still without power is Merrick, where LIPA COO Michael Hervey got an earful from frustrated residents this morning. Hervey assured LIPA customers that crews will remain on the job until it's done.
Hervey says he is hoping to have 90 percent of customers back on line by Friday, but some outages may linger into the Labor Day weekend. He also added that just because you don't see a LIPA truck on the street, that doesn't mean people aren't working.
Hervey also informed residents that they should expect "intentional" power outages that are needed to safely make repairs to wires. The outages could range from seconds to hours.
