LI native, NFL legend John Mackey dies at 69

? NFL legend and Long Island native John Mackey has passed away at the age of 69.

Mackey was a native of Roosevelt and was among the greatest professional athletes to emerge from Nassau County. In addition, he served as a national role model with his commitment to community.

The John Mackey Award recognizing college football?s most outstanding tight end was created in 2000 to honor Mackey and his accomplishments on and off the field.

Mackey played for the Baltimore Colts from 1963-71, and helped the team beat the Dallas Cowboys in the 1971 Super Bowl by catching a pass from Johnny Unitas after it deflected off two other players for a 75-yard touchdown.

Mackey also played for the San Diego Chargers in 1972, and finished his 10-year career with 331 catches for 5,236 yards and 38 touchdowns.
