Little League field in Centereach burglarized
Officials say a Little League field in Suffolk County has been burglarized.
News 12 Long Island has learned a shed at the Hawkins Road ball fields in Centereach was burglarized twice in just over a week. The first incident happened Wednesday, and then the shed was targeted again Thursday morning.
The field manager tells News 12 the thieves stole $15,000 in tools, a generator, golf carts and a defibrillator. Police say they have since recovered one of the stolen golf carts in a wooded area near the ball fields.
Suffolk detectives have dusted for fingerprints. The league is also installing surveillance cameras to prevent another theft.
Teen players say they're determined not to let this discourage them. They plan to start fundraising soon to replace the stolen equipment.
More than 800 children between the ages of 4 and 18 years old play baseball on the fields every year.
