Crackdown begins on speeding, distracted drivers

Officials say there is a major crackdown on speeding and distracted driving underway.
The initiative is part of an annual "Speed Week" campaign.
State and local police will be out in full force beginning today looking for drivers who fail to signal, change lanes unsafely or text or talk without a hands-free device.
Fines can reach up to $1,000.
News 12 rode along today with New York State Troopers on the Southern State Parkway and observed drivers tailgating, weaving in and out of lanes and exceeding speeds of 80 mph.
"We feel good when we stop someone like that and maybe we can change their habits," said Trooper Frank Bandiero.
The crackdown is in effect until next Thursday.
