Deadline reached for assault weapon owners to register their guns
Tuesday is the deadline for gun owners in New York to register guns that are defined as assault weapons.
Anyone who owns an assault weapon prior to the new law must register it or face a felony.
Many gun owners across New York say they are not going to comply with the new law and will risk facing criminal charges. They say the law is unnecessary and confusing.
"I think people's attitudes are - they feel that registration is just a prerequisite to confiscation," says Andy Chernoff, of Coliseum Guns in Uniondale. He says he has been advising confused customers to Google New York Safe Act for more information about the law.
Supporters of the law say any steps that could potentially reduce gun violence are a good thing.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo spearheaded passage of the law following the school shooting in Newtown, Conn.
