Federal health officials say children are accidentally poisoning themselves by drinking the fruit-flavored liquid nicotine used in e-cigarettes.
Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that calls to poison control centers for accidental exposure jumped from one per month in September 2010 to 215 in February 2014. More than half of those calls involved children.
Dan Jacobsen, of the North Shore-LIJ Center for Tobacco Control says the substance can trigger eye, skin and inhalation injuries.
