National Highway Safety Administration kicks off new campaign against distracted driving
The National Highway Safety Administration is kicking off a new campaign of TV spots and grants to boost state enforcement of distracted driving.
The NHTSA says nearly 4,000 people were killed in 2012 by distracted drivers who texted behind the wheel, and over 400,000 were injured. Safety advocates call texting and driving a growing problem.
Experts say in the seconds that it takes for a person to send a text, their car will have traveled 100 yards before an emergency stop can be made.
The government is spending $8 million on the TV ads to warn against texting while driving. They're also handing out grant money to states for distracted driving crackdowns.
