Additional help is on the way for New York veterans suffering from mental illness.
This year's state budget includes funding for the PFC Joseph Dwyer PTSD Peer-to-Peer Veterans Support Program.
State Sen. Lee Zeldin tells News 12 that the program helps veterans cope with post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury by providing them support from their peers.
The new state budget now includes $2 million for the expansion of the program into 12 counties across the state, including Suffolk and Nassau.
Organizers say it has served about 450 veterans since it began in January 2013.
Suffolk County currently has the largest population of veterans in New York.
