More Long Island police officers will be carrying the life-saving drug Narcan to revive heroin overdose victims.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced a statewide program today to spend $5 million to put Narcan in police cars statewide and train officers to use it. Schneiderman says the program would not be funded by taxpayers, but with money seized from criminals.

Right now, nearly 1,100 Suffolk officers have Narcan training. The department reportedly averages 10 rescues a month and has saved nearly 180 lives since the pilot program was launched in 2012.

While it's currently in about 80 percent of the patrol cars in Suffolk, it's only available in ambulances throughout Nassau County.

A spokesman for the Nassau County executive says that aside from the attorney general's money, they have also been working on getting Narcan in police cars.

An announcement on that plan is expected in the coming weeks.
