LI Chilean community awaits word from loved ones affected by 8.2 earthquake
Many Long Island residents with family in Chile are waiting for word that their loved ones are OK after an 8.2 earthquake that rocked the northern region of the country.
Many members of the Chilean community gathered at San Antonio's Bakery and Restaurant in Valley Stream to discuss the event and share news from their loved ones back home.
Residents said that the family members were safe, but without power. They told News 12 that it was frustrating to be so far away when many are in need of help.
Authorities say the high-magnitude earthquake could have been much worse. They say six deaths have been reported.
Many of the Chilean community members on Long Island say they plan on sending money to those affected by the disaster.
