The driver of a pickup truck was killed today after crashing into a charter bus in Albertson.
The crash occurred at around 9 a.m. at the corner of Roslyn Road and Heathcote Drive.
Nassau police say a black Dodge Dakota pickup truck driven by 43-year-old Facundo R. Ponce was traveling south on Roslyn Road when it crossed the yellow line into the direct path of an MCI bus heading north. They say the impact killed Ponce immediately.
The bus then slammed into a tree, trapping the 60-year-old driver inside for nearly an hour. A 38-year-old passenger was inside the bus at the time of the incident.
Both victims were then transported to a local hospital and treated for multiple injuries. They are listed in critical condition.
Police say it appears the truck's speed played a major role in the fatal accident.
Coach Bus Company released a statement saying that safety is the company's No. 1 priority. The company added, "Our thoughts are with those who are involved."
