The Department of Transportation says its crews have begun work on a stretch of the Northern State Parkway that was riddled with potholes.
The area just east of the Wantagh Parkway was so bad that dozens of drivers called police to report that they were stranded with flat tires.
After Monday morning's sudden burst of snow, crews traded salt for asphalt to repair the craters.
The DOT says the relentless winter weather is to blame. Once its crews repair a hole, moisture from rain or snow can loosen the patch and force it back open.
A DOT spokesperson says crews used 1,180 tons of asphalt to repair potholes in January and February. There is also a plan to resurface some major roadways, including the LIE near Willis Avenue.
Drivers can call 1-800-POTHOLE to report holes on state roads to the DOT.
