Officials have given a public update on Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant following the significant damage it suffered during Sandy.

The county has received more than $800 million in federal funding to upgrade the facility, and today the public received a progress report about how the work is progressing.

Chief Deputy County Executive Rob Walker and the firms overseeing management of the project say that there are currently six active construction projects on the property. They also discussed plans to build a berm to protect the facility in the future, as well as a proposal to build an outflow pipe that would bypass the Reynolds Channel and empty 3 miles south of Long Beach in the Atlantic Ocean.

Legislator Dave Denenberg, the ranking Democrat on the Nassau County Legislature Public Works Committee, says the county and the developers are moving too slowly to upgrade the facility.

"So many of the Sandy-related projects are still in the design phase and construction hasn't gone out to contract, not even out to bid," he says.

The project is scheduled to be completed in four years.
