Long Island Red Cross volunteers honored during event in Woodbury

American Red Cross volunteers were honored Saturday during an event in Woodbury.
The biggest award of the day went to Brentwood resident Celia Vollmer, who has been volunteering for the Red Cross for more than seven years. She also ran a shelter at Brentwood High School during Superstorm Sandy and says her service will continue for years to come.
"I'm on the disaster team that responds 24 hours a day when someone is displaced from their home, whether it's an explosion, a fire, a gas leak," said Vollmer. "We respond and make sure they have a safe place to stay."
There were 100 volunteers at Saturday's event, which represents only a portion of the 1,000 Red Cross volunteers across Long Island.
The event kicked off National Red Cross Month, which is celebrated across the nation.
