Suffolk DPW report looks at turning John J. Foley Skilled Nursing Facility into jail
A report by the Suffolk County Department of Public Works considers converting the John J. Foley Skilled Nursing Facility into a new jail.
According to the report, the plan would cost the county around an additional $29 million.
The report also looked at converting the building into an alternative facility for DWI offenders or a drug treatment facility.
Deputy County Executive Jon Schneider says all of those plans are too expensive and that the building needs to be sold. Schneider also said the county is in negotiations with a potential buyer, but would not give any other details.
The facility was shut down months ago because the county could no longer afford to run a public nursing home.
