Bethel-Christian Avenue-Laurel Hill District makes Preservation League of New York State’s Seven to Save list
The Preservation League of New York State has listed a Setauket neighborhood as an endangered historic site.
The Bethel-Christian Avenue-Laurel Hill District has been placed on the preservation league's biannual Seven to Save list. The designation includes Bethel AME Church and the Laurel Hill Cemetery.
Historians say the area is one of the last remaining intact communities that represents the African-American, Native American population on Long Island.
The community has roots back to the 1600s, when displaced African-American slaves and Native Americans from the Setalcott tribe settled in the area.
