Police investigating possible dogfighting ring after firefighters uncover dead dogs in Freeport fire
Firefighters responding to a garage fire may have uncovered a dogfighting operation.
Fire crews were called to a fire on Hillside Avenue in Freeport at around 2 p.m. According to authorities, 12 dogs were found dead in the fire. 
Police, fire and animal control officials are trying to determine who owned the dogs and what actually was going on.
Neighbors say they never heard dogs barking at the house and that there were no signs of trouble.
