A public hearing was held Thursday in Smithtown on Superstorm Sandy recovery efforts in Suffolk County. 

Lawmakers and residents called on Gov. Andrew Cuomo to provide additional funding for their communities.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development recently allocated more than $2 billion in grants to New York State to be used for storm recovery. The state has developed an action plan on how to use that money. 

Several residents from Shirley and Mastic Beach say the state should fund the construction of a new sewer system in their community.

Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, who represents parts of West Babylon and Lindenhurst, called on the governor to set aside funding for the Bergen Point Sewage Plant, which was damaged during Sandy.

The Governor's Office of Storm Recovery will be hosting a similar open forum at the Nassau County Legislative Building on Wednesday, March 5.
