Long Island residents may soon be seeing cameras near school zones looking for speeders.

Like red light cameras at intersections, cameras would be installed school zones in Nassau and Suffolk counties to ensure a 20 mph speed limit is observed in school zones. Drivers going beyond the limit would get a ticket in the mail.

Officials believe tickets from the new school zone cameras would bring in a couple million dollars for each county.

However, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano says it's not about the revenue, it's about safety.

"Clearly this is a way to protect children," says Mangano. "There really is no excuse to speed through a school zone during school hours."

The camera proposal is an amendment to the proposed state budget and still needs the approval of state lawmakers.
