Music teacher Yoel Gonzalez, of Valley Stream, accused of raping teenage student
A Valley Stream music teacher is accused of having a sexual relationship with a teenage student for two years.
Detectives say Yoel Gonzalez, 27, met his victim at Bracco Music School in Valley Stream when she was 13. According to police, Gonzalez quit to tutor her privately at home and then initiated the sexual relationship when the girl was 15.
The victim's mother says her daughter is now hospitalized for severe depression.
"She has been suicidal for several years, and it really is all Yoel's fault," she says.
Gonzales is charged with third-degree rape. His attorney, Leonard Chipkin, has filed a plea of not guilty. Chipkin describes his client as a quiet young man who was a friend of the victim's family.
"We are going to defend the charges very vigorously," says Chipkin. "My client denies this contact with this young lady."
Detectives are looking into the possibility of more victims in the case.
