Flooding forced more than 100 people out of a Rockville Centre assisted living facility Wednesday morning.
First responders told News 12 that the residents of Maple Point Assisted Living were in the waterlogged facility for several hours before the authorities were called for help.
Firefighters spent four hours helping evacuate residents, who are spending the night at hotels or with loved ones.
Officials at the facility showed News 12 the damage to a hallway, dining room and elevator shafts, where more than 6 inches of water collected. Residents' rooms were not affected.
John Thorp, of the Rockville Centre Fire Department, said there was a delay reporting the flooding and that the department was notified by relatives of residents.
The president of the facility says the emergency system in place sounded and alerted the authorities.
Officials say a pipe burst in the building, most likely due to the cold weather. There were no injuries reported during the incident.
