Long Island environmentalists, politicians, civic groups and commercial fishermen rallied in Mineola Tuesday afternoon to urge the state to fund a new sewage pipe in the Bay Park treatment plant.

Adrienne Esposito, from the Citizens Campaign for the Environment, and others say the current sewage outflow pipe, which is located in Reynolds Channel, dumps 60 million gallons each day of treated sewage into the channel. They say the sewage kills off everything in and around the western bays.

The proposed plan is to build a new pipe from the treatment plant that will travel from Long Beach to three miles out into the ocean. Environmentalists and local politicians are lobbying for the $700 million needed to move the sewage outflow into the ocean.

The environmentalists hope to secure the funding for the new sewage pipe by the spring. Gov. Andrew Cuomo released a statement Tuesday saying he will ask for additional federal funding to construct the ocean sewage pipe.
